Lab and Lunch: Listening for Change in San Francisco Bay

Wednesday,December 19,2018 • Noon–1:00 p.m.
Fisher Bay Observatory Gallery

When scientists see changes in an ecosystem they can often hear them as well.Monitoring different species' sounds – or bioacoustics – is one method to quickly detect environmental change. But urban underwater habitats like San Francisco Bay are dominated by ship and vessel noise, which can drown out most biological sounds. Is it possible to listen for environmental change in the Bay's underwater soundscape?

Bring your lunch and join us as acoustics researcherGeorge Czeckshares recordings of life beneath the 澳门金沙国际Exploratorium piers. He will also share preliminary findings from his research at San Francisco State University's Estuary and Ocean Science Center, where he is conducting the first long-term study of snapping shrimp acoustics in San Francisco Bay.
